General
Description and Benefits
Amphibian Conservation Alliance is a nonprofit organization
working to protect frogs and other amphibians worldwide, and
our Washington, DC office seeks summer, fall, winter and
spring interns to work on several projects. Although the
positions are unpaid, they offer unusually good career
opportunities for applicants to take on high levels of
responsibility and build records of concrete accomplishments
in the environmental, policy, internet, fundraising, or
business fields. The internships may be used to earn academic
credit. ACA’s office is located directly above the Rosslyn
station of DC’s Metro subway system.
General Qualifications
All ACA interns must possess excellent research, communication
and interpersonal skills, an ability and enthusiasm for
working independently, and a strong commitment to
environmental conservation. Projects are available for both
undergraduate and graduate students, as well as young
professionals. In every case, job expectations are carefully
tailored to fit both ACA's needs and the intern or fellow's
particular interests and skills. Specific
qualifications, if applicable, are listed under each position
below.
Internship
Descriptions and Specific Qualifications
Public Policy Intern:
ACA is one of the few DC-based environmental groups working to
advance amphibian conservation policy. ACA’s Public Policy
Intern helps lead our efforts in this regard by maintaining
up-to-date scientific and policy information about amphibian
conservation issues; writing fact sheets and web articles;
regularly communicating with scientists and policy
stakeholders via phone and meetings; and participating in “Hill
drops” and other advocacy activities.
Specific Qualifications: Academic training and/or experience
in political science, law, and/or policy is a plus.
Business Development
Intern: Through our newly established Frog Friends™
initiative, ACA is working to build strategic partnerships
with leading businesses interested in amphibian conservation.
ACA’s Business Development Intern helps lead the acquisition
of new partners in this program by: developing program
materials; identifying and gathering information about
potential partners; drafting letters of introduction;
attending meetings; and following up with new partners.
Specific Qualifications: Academic training and/or experience
in business (e.g., development, marketing, or sales) is a
plus.
Foundation
Development Intern: ACA’s Development Intern works
closely with ACA’s President to help secure financial
support for ACA in the form of charitable grants by:
identifying and gathering information about potential
grantees; drafting letters of inquiry, proposals, and
supporting materials for existing and potential funders; and
helping to maintain a calendar of reporting and other
follow-up activities.
Specific Qualifications: Candidates must have strong writing
and research skills. Experience with drafting funding
proposals is a plus but not required.
Executive Intern: ACA’s
Executive Intern works closely with the organization’s
President to oversee administration and board relations for
the organization, that is, the “business side” of ACA.
Responsibilities will include everything from helping to
oversee financial and reporting obligations to helping to
arrange Board meetings.
Specific Qualifications: This is a position of considerable
responsibility. Applicants must be well organized, excellent
at communicating, and able to handle many tasks
simultaneously. Some academic background or experience in
corporate management is a plus.
Web Designer: ACA’s
website FROGS.ORG is one of the most popular amphibian-related
destinations on the web. Web Designers maintain content on the
site (using an easy-to-learn online system), market the site,
maintain statistics about the site’s usage, and help lead
the development of several entirely new sections of the site.
Specific Qualifications: Many strong candidates for this
position have a creative, journalistic, or literary
background. Web programming experience is a plus but not
required.
